A steel beam is a fundamental structural element used in construction to support vertical and horizontal loads, providing strength and rigidity to metal and concrete structures. Steel beams are usually made of steel and are selected based on the type of load and the distance between columns and supports.

Importance of Steel Beams:

  • Carry heavy loads such as floors, roofs, and bridges.
  • Distribute loads evenly across columns and supports.
  • Increase structural stiffness and reduce bending or deflection.
  • Allow flexible design for interior building spaces.

Types of Steel Beams

I-Beam (Parallel Flange Beam)
  • Shape: Resembles the letter I.
  • Features: Has a thin vertical web and horizontal top and bottom flanges that provide good bending resistance.
  • Uses: Used in bridges, high-rise buildings, and industrial structures.
H-Beam (English Beam)
  • Shape: Resembles the letter H.
  • Features: Wider than the I-beam and offers higher vertical load resistance.
  • Uses: Suitable for large buildings, bridges, and heavy structures where additional strength is required.
U-Beam (Channel Beam)
  • Shape: Resembles the letter U.
  • Features: Consists of a base with two vertical sides, provides good longitudinal support but less bending resistance compared to I or H beams.
  • Uses: Used in light structures, metal frames, and secondary supports.
Z, C, U Beams (Zigzag / Channel / U Shaped Beams)
  • Shape: Varies according to the letter (Z, C, or U).
  • Features: Flexible and easy to install, allows quick and crosswise connections with other metal parts.
  • Uses: Used in metal roofing, suspended walls, industrial frames, and light structures.

Note: Choosing the right steel beam depends on the project type, expected loads, and the spacing between columns. I-Beams and H-Beams are preferred for heavy loads, while U-Beams and Z/C/U beams are suitable for light to medium structures.
